After being gutted by fire more than three years ago, the Georgetown Library is scheduled to reopen Monday after a nearly $18 million renovation.
The Georgian-style brick building has been entirely rebuilt on the inside and expanded in some areas. The basement was excavated one and a half feet deeper for more head room and extended under the newly rebuilt reading terrace on the south side.
In the formerly unfinished attic, new rooms have been carved out under the pitched roof and some of the salvaged woodwork is reused in those rooms. The attic is the new home of the library’s Peabody Collection, a treasure trove of Georgetown history.
The building officially opens Monday and a grand opening celebration for the community is schedule for Oct. 23.
