Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is being sued by a group of Chinese investors who believe they were lured into a scam by the electric car company he helped found.
The 32 investors from China filed a lawsuit of at least $17.92 million against McAuliffe and his former company, GreenTech Automotive, calling it a “scam perpetrated by savvy and politically connected operatives and businessmen.”
According to the investors’ lawyer, Scott Abeles, the group was organized after hearing of GreenTech’s struggles to stay in business.
“They basically said we lost all our money and now we’re hearing these guys are going to go out of business,” said Abeles.
The lawsuit brought against McAuliffe and GreenTech alleges 26 of the investors who were expecting permanent residency in America might have to leave with their families in addition to losing all their money.
The suit also claims GreenTech “milked” connections to McAuliffe and former President Bill Clinton so the company could use these political ties to approve immigration paperwork much quicker.
Crystal Carson, spokeswoman for McAuliffe’s political action committee, claims the suit brought against the Virginia governor is a “baseless suit which has no merit whatsoever.”
McAuliffe left the GreenTech in 2012 and has claimed that he no longer has any ties to the company since then.
