Woman charged with not scanning all items at Walmart self-checkout

A Michigan woman was charged with stealing items from Walmart after failing to scan them while at the self-checkout.

Michigan State Police say TeddyJo Marie Fliam, 34, stole more than $1,000 worth of merchandise over several visits to an Alpena County Walmart dating back to April.

A loss prevention employee attempted to confront Fliam in July as she was leaving, resulting in an argument, according to WJRT. Surveillance video was then reviewed, showing Fliam had allegedly skipped scanning items during multiple shopping trips.

Fliam was arrested at her home and now faces a single charge of first-degree retail fraud filed by the Alpena County Prosecutor’s Office.

Walmart began using artificial intelligence in 2019, including the use of cameras at both self- and manned-checkout stations, to monitor unscanned items and alert an employee who can look into the situation.

“Walmart is making a true investment to ensure the safety of our customers and associates,” a Walmart spokesperson reportedly said at the time. “Over the last three years, the company has invested over half a billion dollars in an effort to prevent, reduce and deter crime in our stores and parking lots. We are continuously investing in people, programs and technology to keep our stores and communities safe.”
