Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Tim Kaine hauled in $1.65 million in the final months of 2011, significantly outpacing the Republican frontrunner in Virginia, George Allen.
Kaine ended the year with $3.3 million still in the bank, also more than Allen.
“Smart spending will ensure we have the resources we need to compete in the home stretch of this campaign,” Kaine said in a statement.
“[Former Democratic National Committee] Chairman Kaine has said himself that he is unabashed supporter of President Obama and, as expected, his support is being rewarded,” Allen spokesman Bill Riggs said.
On the year, Kaine raised $5.2 million to Allen’s $4.5, though Allen spent more considerably more.
The two former governors are expected to engage in one of the most heated contests in the country. Allen is vying for the seat he held until 2006 while Kaine was tapped by President Obama to run.
