Disgraced Broward County sheriff is running again

Former Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel filed to run for reelection in an attempt to get his old job back.

Israel filed the necessary paperwork Monday to run in the 2020 Democratic primary, according to the Sun Sentinel. He made the filing with his wife and campaign manager.

Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis removed Israel from his position in January over his mishandling of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in which 17 students and faculty were killed.

When he was removed, Israel ripped into DeSantis.

“He made good on a political promise. My suspension is political. It’s anti-American. It’s anti-democratic. It’s unacceptable. You don’t do that to people. Shame on him for that, and I just hope and pray the truth will come out,” Israel said, vowing he would run for office again.

Israel is fighting the suspension in the Florida Senate, which could vote on it in September.
