Former U.S. Rep. Albert Wynn has been ordered to pay $8,000 for illegally spending more than $100,000 in general election donations on his failed 2008 primary election campaign against Rep. Donna Edwards.

Maryland law mandates fund raising accounts between the general and primary elections be kept separate.

Federal Election Commission papers show Wynn spent $115,100 of his general election funding on his 2008 primary election — for which he spent roughly $1.5 million. The information was first reported by the Gazette.

Wynn, D-Dist. 4, was first elected in 1993 and remained in office until his 2008 loss to Edwards.

The former congressman argued in court that he was unaware the two accounts must be kept separate.
