RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The debt-ridden national slavery museum proposed by former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder wants a law firm pushing for liquidation disqualified from the museum’s Chapter 11 organization.
In a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, museum attorney Sandra R. Robinson says the law firm representing Celebrate Virginia should be disqualified because it had assisted the museum on confidential legal issues in the past.
Hirschler Fleisher represents Celebrate Virginia, which donated 38 acres for the proposed U.S. National Slavery Museum in Fredericksburg. It has asked the court to convert the case to a Chapter 7 liquidation so the museum’s biggest asset — the land — can be sold.
Later this month, a judge is to consider a reorganization plan that relies on donations to get pay back the museum’s creditors.
