WMAR, 1st Mariner convert loose change into large donation

Following the example set by the show, “Oprah?s Big Give,” 1st Mariner Bank and WMAR on Friday planned to donate almost $20,000 through the “Give Change 2 Change Lives” campaign to support Kids? Chance of Maryland.

In the spirit of Oprah?s philanthropic reality challenge, ABC on March 16 donated $10,000 to WMAR to help change lives in Baltimore. Kids? Chance provides educational opportunities through scholarships to children whose parents have been killed or seriously injured on the job.

From March 16 to Friday, WMAR encouraged Marylanders to donate any loose change at any 1st Mariner Bank location to try to match the $10,000 donated by ABC.

“You think about how much we spend on coffee or value meals, and that small amount of money can make a big difference in children?s lives,” said Simone Baptiste, public relations manager for WMAR.

WMAR and 1st Mariner held a Big Tally Event Friday at 1st Mariner?s Hickory Branch and planned to hand over a check to Kids? Chance of Maryland.

Every year, 3.5 million people are disabled by on-the-job injuries, and another 5,000 lose their lives, according to Kids? Chance.
