Maryland has a new rule on what drivers should do at traffic signals when the signals aren’t working.
The current law requires drivers on the left to yield to drivers on the right. The new rule will require all drivers to treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Cars approaching the intersection from any direction must stop and wait until the intersection is clear before proceeding.
The new rule takes effect Oct. 1.
Montgomery County drivers have faced multiple outages of traffic signals during recent storms. Traffic lights across the county also went out once because of a rare computer failure. That computer has since been replaced.
