Hillary Clinton’s campaign declared that FBI Director James Comey’s congressional testimony Thursday about the decision not to bring charges “shut the door on any remaining conspiracy theories.”
“Despite the partisan motivations of this hearing, we are glad it took place and that Director Comey had the opportunity to expand upon his remarks from earlier this week,” Hillary for America press secretary Brian Fallon said in a statement Thursday afternoon. “Director Comey’s testimony clearly knocked down a number of false Republican talking points and reconciled apparent contradictions between his previous remarks and Hillary Clinton’s public statements.”
He added, “The Director’s explanations shut the door on any remaining conspiracy theories once and for all. While Republicans may try to keep this issue alive, this hearing proved those efforts will only backfire.”
During the multi-hour hearing, Comey admitted that Clinton showed classified information to people with no security clearance and that her actions were “negligent” but he still did not recommend indictment because he did not find enough evidence to suggest Clinton knowingly exposed classified intelligence. The FBI director also admitted he wasn’t sure the former secretary of state was “sophisticated enough” to recognize the classified markings.
