Gray’s Navigator becomes sideshow outside downtown club

Inside the Metropolitan Club of Washington, Vince Gray told supporters he’ll soon be announcing Kaya Henderson as the permanent D.C. schools chancellor. But outside attendees leaving the luncheonlaughed at the presence of Gray’s “fully loaded” Lincoln Navigator, which sat parked by the main entrance with a driver inside and engine running for more than an hour.

“There it is, fully loaded,” one man joked to his friends, pointing at the sport-utility vehicle as he left the downtown D.C. club.

“Is that one of the notorious Lincoln Navigators? Why is he still driving it?” another clubgoer said.

“Is that the car everyone has been writing about?” a woman said with a laugh before hailing a cab.

Gray has stood by the police department’s decision to get him a fully loaded Navigator with a $1,941 monthly lease. But the response outside the Metropolitan Club show it has become a distracting sideshow.
