Special meeting Tuesday on Eastern Market area development

The neighborhood surrounding the proposed redevelopment of Hine Junior High School near Eastern Market is hosting a special meeting Tuesday evening on the development’s new designs before a city public hearing scheduled this week.

The development by Stanton EastBanc has inspired opposition from neighbors since its unveiling earlier this year.

The city’s Historic Preservation Review Board has signed off on what some say is the most controversial building, a six-story residential building near the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Eighth Street Southeast. Next up on Friday, the panel will consider plans for a residential building on the corner of Seventh and C streets and another residential building on C Street across from Eastern Market.

The new designs can be viewed here.

Residents are circulating a petition against the plans, arguing that the buildings in the roughly one-square-block development are too large for the surrounding neighborhood. Last month, developers have produced a petition of their own, with roughly 50 signatures in support of the project.

The community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the People’s Church on Barracks Row. A representative from the city planning department also will be there for questions.
