Czech zoo welcomes endangered rhino named Kyiv

An endangered eastern black rhinoceros was named Kyiv after it was born at a Czech zoo.

The Dvůr Králové Zoo welcomed the rhino on March 4, a special moment for the facility that has the most rhinos of the subspecies, according to a report.


“The name is another expression of our support for the Ukrainian heroes,” said zoo director Premysl Rabas.

The baby is in the care of its mother and is growing by 1 kilogram daily, officials said.

Currently, 14 eastern black rhinos call the Czech zoo home, according to the report, and at least 47 rhinos of the subspecies have been born at the zoo since 1971.

The type of rhino is native to Rwanda and Tanzania, but poaching has reduced the number of wild eastern black rhinos to roughly 800.
