Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign is off to a good start in North Carolina.
Biden carried a double-digit lead in a new Emerson College poll released Tuesday.
Biden is ahead of President Trump 56% to 44% in the Tar Heel State, according to a study conducted May 31 through June 3.
Trump carried North Carolina in 2016, earning 50% of the vote to Hillary Clinton’s 46%.
In the Democratic primary, Biden leads with 39%, followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders at 22% and Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 15%.
“A trend of Biden and Sanders primary voters is beginning to emerge: among other variables, a Biden voter is more likely to be a registered Democrat as compared to the Sanders voter who is more likely to be Independent,” Spencer Kimball, director of Emerson Polling, said in a statement.
The study also found that 32% of voters identify the economy as the single most important issue in picking a candidate.
The economy has been one of Trump’s rallying points in the run-up to his reelection campaign.
Trump has repeatedly said he is “not worried” about Biden or any of the Democrats vying for a chance to challenge him in the 2020 presidential election.
