MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — An oilfield trucker operating illegally has pleaded guilty to pretending to be a Texas Ranger.
Donald Walter McBroom pleaded guilty Wednesday in Midland to impersonation of a federal officer. No sentencing date has been set for the 65-year-old Midland man, who faces up to three years in prison.
Investigators say McBroom had no commercial license and faked being a law officer to avoid penalties while hauling pipe.
A Texas trooper pulled McBroom’s truck over Aug. 21 in Winkler County. Investigators say McBroom flashed a fake Texas Rangers badge and said he was with the Permian Basin Oilfield Theft Task Force.
The Odessa American (bit.ly/OMj) reported Thursday the task force is run by the FBI, enhancing the charge to impersonating a federal officer.
