Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson on Wednesday appeared to agree with the FBI’s decision not to pursue criminal charges against Hillary Clinton because the agency believes she did not have the requisite level of criminal intent.
“Was there criminal intent? You know, I never did think there was criminal intent but I’m not the stone-thrower here,” Johnson said during a sit-down interview with the Washington Examiner.
FBI director James Comey described Clinton as “extremely careless” in her handling of classified information at the State Department during a press conference Tuesday and said her private email server may have been breached by U.S. adversaries during the trips she took abroad as secretary of state.
The former New Mexico governor wouldn’t say whether he thinks Clinton is guilty of gross negligence — “I’m not the one to lend judgment in all this,” Johnson told the Examiner — but maintained that the Democratic presidential hopeful made a series of poor decisions involving her private email practices.
“I think bad judgment was really at the core of everything that transpired,” Johnson said, declining to discuss the matter further.
“There’s so many others that focus on this and I’d like to focus on economic issues [and] on issues of the day,” he noted. “[I’m] trying to drive that middle swath that most Americans I think want to see us all go down and that is, we’ve got some issues economically.”
