Lanny Davis, a longtime Clinton family ally, suggested Thursday that former FBI Director James Comey may have leaked information to Rudy Giuliani.
During a CNN panel discussion that focused on Comey’s memos, Davis turned the conversation to Giuliani, who revealed earlier in the day he would be joining President Trump’s legal team.
“There is something he needs to be asked in, the new attorney for President Trump needs to be asked,” said Davis, who referred to Giuliani’s Oct. 25, 2016, tease that the Trump campaign, for which he was a surrogate, had an upcoming “surprise.”
Three days later, Comey announced the FBI investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized private email server was being reopened during the campaign — a move that Clinton and her allies have blamed for contributing to her presidential election loss less than two weeks later.
Davis, who served as a special counsel to former President Bill Clinton, said he wants to see special counsel Robert Mueller force Giuliani to give grand jury testimony about whether Comey leaked to him information about the FBI’s operation.
“I want to see the day when he meets with Mueller, and Mr. Giuliani, representing Mr. Trump, is handed a subpoena by Mr. Mueller saying, ‘Now you’re called before a grand jury,'” Davis said.
“‘We want to know who leaked this information to you, and was it Jim Comey? I want to see all your emails between you, Giuliani, and you Comey,'” he added, imitating what might be told to Giuliani.
After being asked what this tangent had to do with Comey’s memos, Davis said he wants to know if Giuliani is a subject of Mueller’s investigation because, “I think what Giuliani did may have been a crime.”
Clinton previously suggested that Giuliani, along with current and former FBI officials, may have pressured Comey into reopening the emails case.
A couple days before the election, Comey revealed the case had been closed again and that the FBI maintained its prior position that no charges should be brought against Clinton. Comey was fired as head of the FBI last spring by Trump.
Comey worked for Giuliani, who previously was mayor of New York City, while serving in the U.S. attorney’s office in New York.
In his new book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, Comey condemned Giuliani’s “imperial style” of management.
