More than 12,000 people were arrested or cited on Virginia highways over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Virginia State Police said 103 people were arrested for drunken driving, 8,526 were cited for speeding and 2,898 were cited for reckless driving between Wednesday and Sunday. Another 687 motorists received summonses for not wearing seatbelts and 250 were cited for child safety-seat violations.
Police said nine people were killed in holiday weekend crashes. Fatal crashes were reported Appomattox, Chesterfield, Hanover, Henry, Loudoun, Rappahannock and Washington counties, and the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
In total, there were 884 traffic crashes over the weekend.
In Maryland, more than 10,000 motorists were arrested or cited, and six people were killed in five crashes.
