President Trump will meet with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc next week, the White House announced on Tuesday.
“President Trump looks forward to discussing ways to strengthen our bilateral relationship and deepen regional cooperation with one of America’s important partners in Southeast Asia,” the White House said in a statement.
The meeting will come several months after Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a regional trade deal that would have included Vietnam.
Trump has advocated for bilateral trade agreements rather than large, multilateral deals that could hold the U.S. to unfavorable terms. Trade is expected to be a topic of discussion during Trump’s meeting with the Vietnamese prime minister on May 31.
