Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s campaign for the Senate is trying to build support through the argument that electing Democrats to Congress will build a “firewall” to block Donald Trump’s agenda if he wins the White House.
“We have to do everything we can to stop Trump — and that includes building a firewall in the Senate to block his hateful agenda. Make a contribution now to help take back the Senate and elect Tammy Duckworth,” the Illinois Democrat’s campaign manager wrote in a fundraising email sent to supporters on Tuesday.
The email also says Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., whose Senate seat Duckworth is trying to win, has “doubled down” on his support for Trump now that he is the presumptive Republican nominee.
“Kirk might believe that a reality TV star is prepared to hold the highest office in the land, but Donald Trump would be a disaster for our country,” the email reads. “Help defeat a Trump ally and take back the Democratic Senate majority by making a contribution today.”
The Senate race between Kirk and Duckworth is expected to be one of the closest in the nation as Democrats try to win back control of the Senate after suffering losses last cycle.
A poll reported last month by the Chicago Sun Times found the race is a statistical tie.
