No federal budget? No D.C. government, Norton warns

The District’s delegate to Congress is warning that if action isn’t taken soon the city government could be shut down if the federal government runs out of money next week.

Eleanor Holmes Norton said Thursday that she has submitted a bill to House and Senate leaders that would keep the District’s cash flowing even if Congress doesn’t appropriate funding to the rest of the federal government.

D.C. is treated like a federal agency, and although the majority of its spending relies on local tax dollars, its budget must be approved be approved by Congress before any of those dollars can be spent.

When the federal government shut down in 1995, D.C. government closed for a week.
