Montgomery seeks an alternative for Veterans Plaza

Montgomery County is looking for a public market to occupy Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring — which is already occupied by the Fenton Street Market on Saturdays April through November.

The county issued a Request for Proposal for the “Operation, Management and Marketing of a Public Market with Related Activities.” Proposals are due to the county’s Department of General Services by 3 p.m. Nov. 4.

In July, the county asked the Fenton Street Market to begin paying $1,200 a week, rather than the $48 it pays now. Ginny Gong, director of the county’s Office of Community Use of Public Facilities, explained at the time that $1,200 is the going rate for Veterans Plaza, and the Fenton Street Market should not be given preferential treatment.

The dispute has led Montgomery to explore other options for the space.

Fenton Street Market founder and director Hannah McCann would not say whether she would submit a bid to keep the space at Veterans Plaza.
