After narrowly edging out another Democratic hopeful, Jennifer Dougherty has set her sights on what could be a tough race against an eight-term incumbent in the 6th Congressional District.
Dougherty, former Frederick mayor, netted 44 percent of the vote, beating out Andrew Duck, who also ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic nominee against U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett in the last election cycle.
“I am very optimistic that Democrats and independents and like-minded Republicans will look at the issues and not long-term incumbency,” Dougherty said.
The district includes parts of Carroll, Harford and Baltimore counties.
Dougherty, who ran on her four years of mayoral experience, said she knows how to balance a budget and create jobs.
Duck, a 20-year Army veteran, had already set his sights on the general election before the primary ended. He said Wednesday he was surprised by the results but that he would do what he can to support Dougherty.
“We need to make sure we bring change,” he said.
Bartlett, who has served for 16 years, won handily against four Republican opponents.
