Trump dings Canada before G-7 trade talks: ‘Not fair to our farmers!’

President Trump said he would use Friday’s G-7 meetings in Canada to push for fair treatment of U.S. dairy products, a sign he wasn’t letting up in his push to alter major trade agreements with U.S. trading partners.

“Canada charges the U.S. a 270% tariff on Dairy Products!” Trump said on Twitter. “They didn’t tell you that, did they? Not fair to our farmers!”

“Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries. If it doesn’t happen, we come out even better!” Trump said in another Friday morning tweet.

Trump says he would agree to a trade deal with Canada but it had to be a “fair trade deal.”

“The United States has been taken advantage of for many decades on trade,” Trump said in a statement in late May. “Those days are over. Earlier today, this message was conveyed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada: The United States will agree to a fair deal, or there will be no deal at all.”

Trump has said Canada has treated the agricultural industry “very poorly.” His criticism comes after the U.S. has imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada, Mexico, Europe, China, Russia and others, in his push to reset the rules of trade to help U.S. exporters and encourage more investment in the U.S.

Canada and others have responded with their own tariffs. But Trump has said he would push on this weekend.

“I am heading for Canada and the G-7 for talks that will mostly center on the long time unfair trade practiced against the United States,” Trump tweeted. “From there I go to Singapore and talks with North Korea on Denuclearization. Won’t be talking about the Russian Witch Hunt Hoax for a while!”
