Santorum eked out a win in the 2012 Iowa caucuses over Mitt Romney, going on to win 10 more states’ primary contests that year before releasing his delegates to Romney just before the Republican National Convention.
A native son of Pennsylvania’s coal country, Santorum served two terms in the U.S. House and two in the Senate before losing reelection in 2006 to Democrat Bob Casey.
