Conway says Trump’s jail threat was just a ‘quip’

Donald Trump’s campaign manager said Monday morning that the Republican candidate wasn’t being serious in the second presidential debate when he threatened to jail his opponent.

“That was a quip,” said Kellyanne Conway on MSNBC.

The Republican presidential nominee said Sunday night that he would hire a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton’s emails if he were elected president. Clinton said, “It’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country,” and Trump shot back: “Because “you’d be in jail.”

Conway minimized that remark by stating it was a quick response to Clinton’s “snide comment,” and said his promise to take further action to prosecute Clinton is his way of “channeling the frustration” of voters.

“But as for the special prosecutor, I think that’s Donald Trump channeling the frustration he hears thousands of voters out on the stump everyday,” she said, noting that others who have done much less than Clinton have faced serious penalties.

Despite the candidate’s claims he would lock Clinton in prison, Conway assured viewers the Republican would not have the authority to do that if elected president.

“Whether she goes to jail is not up to Donald Trump. It’s up to whoever adjudicates whatever crime she has or has not committed,” she said.
