Vice President Kamala Harris wrote a tribute to service members on Memorial Day weekend amid backlash for an earlier tweet that did not reference the military at all.
“Throughout our history, our servicemen and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country. As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice,” Harris tweeted Sunday morning.

The tweet comes a day after Harris initially shared a picture of herself and encouraged people to “enjoy the long weekend.”
Several people criticized the tweet as it did not reference the reason for the “long weekend” — revering the many service members who lost their lives in service to the country.
HARRIS SLAMMED FOR ‘LONG WEEKEND’ TWEET THAT DOESN’T MENTION MEMORIAL DAY
“Care to mention WHY we’re having a long weekend, Kamala?” Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert tweeted in response.

Real misfire here. It is a long weekend. It’s also Memorial Day weekend, which means far more that our government officials should acknowledge: a time to remember and honor the millions of Americans who lost their lives in our nation’s defense https://t.co/RCPwPf4TdL https://t.co/xKyyaOkkQA

Both Biden and Harris gave Memorial Day weekend speeches, with Harris delivering the commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy, becoming the first woman to do so, on Friday, and Biden gave an address on Sunday.
