Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar reportedly cut ties with her husband’s consulting firm after facing scrutiny for paying the firm millions of dollars in the 2019-2020 election cycle.
The Democrat’s campaign addressed the subject in an email to supporters on Sunday, according to a report from the Washington Free Beacon. The campaign said it made the decision to end its financial connection with Tim Mynett’s E Street Group, the firm, to avoid the perception of dubious financial activity.
“So we’ve decided to terminate our contract with Tim and Will’s firm,” the email said. “While many of our close supporters know these two well and have recommended we keep them on — I want to make sure that anybody who is supporting our campaign with their time or financial support feels there is no perceived issue with that support.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to Omar’s office for comment.
Records from the Federal Election Commission show Omar’s campaign paid the consulting group $2.8 million during the most recent election cycle, including digital advertising expenditures that varied from $50,000 to $400,000. The expenses also include a $12,000 bimonthly payment to the firm, $38,000 for direct mail, and $44,000 for mail advertising and production.
Mynett worked on Omar’s campaign during the 2018 midterm elections, but the two were not married at the time. In August 2019, Mynett’s ex-wife alleged in a divorce filing that Omar and Mynett engaged in an affair while he was still a political consultant to the freshman in Congress.
Omar’s romantic history has been subject to scrutiny, with some asserting she married her own brother to assist him in obtaining U.S. citizenship. The congresswoman has denied this is true. Over the years, Omar has had multiple marriages, first to Ahmed Hirsi in 2002 and then to British citizen Ahmed Elmi in 2009, mothering three children to both fathers.
However, she later divorced Elmi in 2017 to remarry her first husband, Hirsi. But as Hirsi reportedly made a visit to Omar in Washington, D.C., after marrying her in 2018, he discovered her having an affair with Mynett. At the time of the alleged affair, which Omar denied, Mynett was also married. Mynett and his wife divorced one month later.
