Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Monday that in order to ease the concerns of conservatives in the party, Donald Trump should promise not to change the party’s platform at the convention in July.
Priebus told radio host Mike Gallagher Monday that Trump should avoid making the platform a point of contention, arguing that Trump should relieve the “anxiety” of those who think he may look to make changes.
“There’s a few things that I think can help in this regard. I think that the Trump folks are willing to explore this,” Priebus told Gallagher, referring to easing the concerns of others in the party. “Number one, Donald Trump is not wanting to rewrite the platform, OK? So all that anxiety, just take it off the table. Not willing to do that, but, you know, but, get into that, tell people that — that you don’t want to rewrite, that you appreciate and agree with the platform the way it is.”
Priebus also repeated his hope that Trump releases five-10 names of potential nominees to the Supreme Court, which he initially floated on Friday.
“The second thing is, I think that they ought to release however many names, five, 10 names,” Priebus told the host. “People that would make great Supreme Court justices from which you’re willing to chose a justice from. Something that Federalist Society and the Heritage folks — solid names that we can say, ‘OK, this what this is about.’
“It’s about a conservative Supreme Court for generations. So you take all this sort of gamesmanship out and say, ‘What is this about?’ This about the future of this country. This is not a game.”
