Steve King falls to second place in primary poll

A Republican polling firm issued a survey showing that voters in Rep. Steve King’s district now narrowly favor his GOP primary challenger.

The poll, which asked 400 Republican primary voters in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District and was commissioned by Public Opinion Strategies, found that 41% currently support state Sen. Randy Feenstra, versus 39% backing King.

“Among self‐identified ‘conservative’ voters, King leads by one point and among ‘moderate’ and ‘liberal’ GOP primary voters, Feenstra holds a 12‐point advantage,” wrote the poll authors. “Feenstra leads in the Sioux City market by 21 points, King leads in the Des Moines market by 10 points and across the other markets in the district by 18 points.”

The survey has a 4.9 percentage point margin of error.

Iowa is scheduled to hold its Republican primary on June 2, with much of the Republican establishment backing King’s challenger.

Several establishment-friendly PACs, such as the Republican Main Street Partnership PAC, have pledged money to King’s opponent. Some House Republicans, including Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the third-highest Republican lawmaker, called for King’s resignation last year following remarks that seemed sympathetic to white nationalism.

“White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?” King said.

Earlier in the month, the Republican Jewish Coalition announced its support for Feenstra and pledged to use its donor network to provide funding to his campaign.

Feenstra has outraised King in every quarter of the campaign cycle so far. On March 31, King’s campaign reported cash reserves of just under $27,000.

A poll commissioned by Feenstra last week found King leading with 39% of the vote, compared to his 36%.
