Brian Baird (D-WA) may have a 100 percent rating from NARAL, the National Farmers Union, Citizens for Tax Justice, and the ACLU, as well as a 94 from the SEIU and an ‘A’ from the NEA, but it’s not enough to let him escape an anti-war primary challenge. That’s because Baird has been an enemy of the anti-war crowd ever since he had the temerity to defy the party line on Iraq, and take a position that is now accepted as part of the conventional wisdom. Baird’s opponent is a former leader of Dennis Kucinich’s presidential campaign, whom Baird defeated in the primary in 2004. She was a local organizer for Dennis Kucinich. She’s been getting favorable press from at least on diarist at DailyKos. The effort by liberal Democrats to defeat “Bush Dog” Democrats is mostly fizzling so far, and in all fairness, Crist is not seen as a serious threat to Baird’s renomination. Still, it’s instructive to see how quickly Democrats ditch the idea that “one man with courage makes a majority.”
