Assistant City Manager takes reins in Falls Church

Falls Church’s council voted in an acting replacement for City Manager Daniel E. McKeever while the city’s top appointed official undergoes cancer treatment.

Assistant City Manager Wyatt Shields, 37, a former town administrator for Scottsville, Va., has served under McKeever since 2003. He was selected Monday night to head the small locality’s government for an undetermined period.

“Mr. Shields will continue to run city government operations seamlessly during Mr. McKeever’s absence,” said Falls Church spokeswoman Nicole Gobbo.

McKeever received treatment for melanoma at the University of Virginia Hospital on Thursday, and is in serious condition, according to a Falls Church news release. He left the position on July 19, Gobbo said.

City Council member Dan Maller said the unanimous appointment will maintain continuity “for the short period of [McKeever’s] treatment and recovery.”

“Mr. Shields has been involved for several years and has worked side by side with Mr. McKeever. … We have complete confidence in [him],” said Maller.
