A new Netflix documentary on Michelle Obama picks up where the former first lady’s memoir ended.
The streaming service announced the surprise documentary, which was filmed during her 34-city book tour, on Monday.
“It’s not getting back on track, but it’s creating my next track. I’m doing what you’re doing — I’m figuring out, ‘What do I want to do, what do I care about?’ And it takes time to process your life and figure out what it all means,” Obama told a group of Philadelphia students in a clip of the documentary.
The documentary, titled the same as Obama’s bestselling memoir, Becoming, is set to be released on May 6.
Netflix said the film “offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes” of her book tour.
“Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud,” Obama said in a statement.
The Obamas signed a deal with Netflix in 2018 to produce films and series for the streaming platform. Their first project for Netflix, American Factory, won the Oscar for best documentary.
