The Numbers Game

Rasmussen has released this new poll that should make Team McCain pretty happy. In a survey of 800 likely voters, McCain is trusted more than Obama in four key areas: the economy (47 to 41 percent), national security (53 to 31 percent) and Iraq (49 to 37 percent), and taxes (44 to 38 percent). Obama only leads on the issue of government ethics/reducing corruption (43 to 39 percent). But Rasmussen also adds,

What is perhaps more significant is that 28% of unaffiliated voters trust neither candidate on this topic.

The overall results on these issues, however, are additional evidence that McCain continues to outperform the generic Republican brand. As Rasmussen observes,

It is interesting to note that while McCain has the edge over Obama on these issues, Democrats are trusted more than Republicans on a generic basis. This ability of McCain to outperform the party label helps explain why he is competitive with the Democrats in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking poll.

These numbers are probably no surprise to the Obama camp. That’s why Democratic operatives will hammer hard on the “McCain is a third Bush term” theme. Will that argument stick? My guess is Team McCain will happily provide a number of illustrations why that’s not the case.
