Alec Baldwin will play Donald Trump on ‘SNL’

Saturday Night Live” revealed Wednesday that actor Alec Baldwin will play Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, beginning with the premiere of the show’s 42nd season airing Saturday.

In a new clip, Baldwin and cast member Kate McKinnon are shown getting ready to play Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. McKinnon’s Clinton impersonation has been an “SNL” staple since before Clinton even launched her campaign.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Lorne Michaels called upon Baldwin to play Trump for the upcoming season, much like he did with Larry David last year when he played Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Trump was previously played by former SNL cast member Darrell Hammond, who serves as the show’s announcer, and Taren Killam. Killam’s contract was not renewed for the upcoming season.

This is not the first time Baldwin has appeared on the show as a political figure: In 2011, he played Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who at the time was a front-runner for the Republican nomination. He also appeared once last year as former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb in a spoof of the first Democratic debate.

Baldwin is also the most frequent guest host of the show, having hosted a record 16 times.

Actress Margot Robbie will host Saturday’s premiere episode.
