Wone defendants describe reaction to slaying

In taped police interviews, the three men accused of covering up the slaying of Robert Wone described their reactions to Wone’s death.

The tapes were shown Thursday in D.C. Superior Court in the trial of Joseph Price, Dylan Ward and Victor Zaborsky, all charged with conspiracy, tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. Wone was found dead in their Dupont Circle townhouse on Aug. 2, 2006.

Here are a few highlight quotes from the interrogation tapes, filmed Aug. 3, 2006:

Ward

  • When he came out of his room, and saw Price by Wone’s dead body: “I was shocked. I didn’t know what to do.”
  • On the possibility of an intruder: “The only explanation that makes sense to me is that somebody was in our house.”

Price

  • Moved the knife from Wone’s chest
  • Insists that Ward and Zaborsky couldn’t have committed the crime: “They couldn’t spank a child that was being bad.”
  • In the guest bedroom where Wone was found, “everything looked fine” except that Wone was on the bed covered in blood.

Zaborsky

  • Was awakened by a “really low breathy grunt” that was “loud.”
  • He “would think” that he would hear an intruder running to leave the house, but said, “We were running down stairs ourselves, so I don’t know if we’d hear somebody else.”
