Steph Curry gives police officer game-worn jersey amid tensions between NBA stars and law enforcement

NBA star Steph Curry was caught on video giving his No. 30 jersey and duffle bags full of memorabilia to a Delaware state trooper featured in a viral video playing basketball in full uniform with children.

“Steph Curry takes off his jersey & gives to the family of a Delaware State trooper he invited to the game,” reported Associated Press sports writer Dan Gelston on Twitter, who captured video of the moment.

Curry invited Delaware state trooper Joshua Morris to the Warriors game against the Philadelphia 76ers after videos of Morris playing basketball against local youth went viral.

In one video, 9-year-old Ra’kir Allen can be heard hyping Morris up as he films the pickup game.

“That’s Curry! That’s Curry!”Allen yelled after Morris nailed a long 3.

Morris eventually returned to gift Allen a brand new pair of sneakers designed by Steph Curry.

“His charisma, his character … I just loved,” Morris said of Allen. “That reeks through his pores. I loved it.”

“When he laces up those sneakers, he has somebody who believes in him. He has somebody who loves him. He has somebody that will be kind to him,” Morris added.

Allen had nothing but good things to say about Morris in response.

“He’s kind. He’s nice, and he likes basketball,” Allen said about Morris.

The duo’s viral connect led to the invite from Curry and the surprising haul of valuable memorabilia.

“He’s an amazing story … with the little kid that was hyping him up,” Curry said. “I had to show him some love. The love he showed the young man and just the foundation of impact that he shared. It’s pretty impressive.”

The story comes at a time of elevated tension between law enforcement and many black communities, with a year of protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

That tension again increased amid multiple high-profile police shootings and the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of multiple charges in the death of Floyd.
