Less than two weeks ahead of the Arizona primary, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema threw her support behind Joe Biden’s presidential bid.
Sinema, a centrist Democrat, was the first Democrat to win a Senate seat there in three decades in 2018.
In her endorsement, Sinema noted that she would put Arizona’s needs ahead of standing with Biden when necessary.
“I am voting for former Vice President Joe Biden — a pragmatic, practical leader best positioned to get things done for everyday families. We certainly don’t agree on every issue; I always vote for Arizona first,” she said in a Wednesday statement.
“Vice President Biden is authentic, genuine, and has a track record of building bipartisan coalitions to achieve results. Not all candidates in this race represent those Arizona values. Joe Biden does.”
Sinema’s backing followed the Biden campaign’s rapid turnaround. The former vice president won 10 out of 14 states on Super Tuesday, besting independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who lost his delegate lead to Biden.
Arizona holds its primary on March 17, and the state is also hosting the next Democratic debate on March 15 in Phoenix.
