Ryan: Trump won nomination ‘fair and square’

House Speaker Paul Ryan is moving to squash any notion of whether Donald Trump should be the nominee of the Republican Party.

“He won the thing fair and square,” Ryan told host George Stephanopoulos during an interview expected to air Sunday on “This Week.” ABC News released part of the interview on Saturday.

“Seventeen people competed, one person won and he got the delegates,” Ryan said. “The delegates ultimately decide these things, but he won fair and square.”

Trump has the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination, but that hasn’t stopped some conservatives from wondering whether he could be prevented getting the nomination at the convention next month.

Some people in the #NeverTrump movement have been toying with the idea of a revolt at the convention.

Conservative commentator Bill Kristol tweeted earlier this week that he is “struck by sudden level of interest in possible delegate revolt at convention.” Kristol is the editor of the Weekly Standard, which is owned by the same media group as the Washington Examiner.

However, such a revolt appears to be highly unlikely. The delegates Trump received are required to vote for him at the convention on the first ballot.
