Sanders takes Montana

Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders won the Montana Democratic primary.

But the 74-year-old’s victory in Big Sky Country may not matter, as Hillary Clinton has now won a majority of pledged delegates in addition to superdelegates and the popular vote.

Sanders’ victory in Montana follows Clinton’s emphasis on Tuesday’s results. She hesitated to celebrate her status as Democrats’ presumptive nominee until after Tuesday’s primaries.

Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, once considered a potential Democratic candidate, threw his support behind former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s campaign. After O’Malley quit, Schweitzer remained largely silent ahead of his state’s primary despite having been a vocal critic of Clinton. His name has been floated as a potential independent candidate.

Sanders, meanwhile, has said he is gearing up for a contested convention.

Clinton will head to Ohio and Pennsylvania to campaign next week. Sanders is expected to head to Washington, D.C., before its primary next week.
