China has ended a 10-week shutdown of Wuhan, the origin of the coronavirus pandemic.
The lockdown came to an end on Wednesday after local officials claimed there have been no new deaths, though residents say they are lying about the impact the virus had on the region.
Officially, there have been only 3,000 deaths in Hubei province, where Wuhan is located. Residents estimated last month that the real death toll was more likely to be well over 40,000 deaths.
Worldwide, there have been 1.4 million confirmed cases and more than 80,000 deaths.
The Chinese government will allow people to leave the Wuhan region under new guidelines if they show authorities their government-sanctioned phone app, which shows how much of a contagion threat they are.
The government estimated that nearly 60,000 people will leave the region by train on Wednesday. Despite this, people will be encouraged to stay home if possible, and schools have not reopened yet.
