Russia denies Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hospitalized in Indonesia

Russia has dismissed a report that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was hospitalized in Bali, Indonesia, before the start of the Group of 20 leaders summit.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described Lavrov’s reported hospital trip as “fake” in a video with her superior, which she posted to her Telegram social media account Monday afternoon local time. It is unclear when the video, capturing a casual clothing-clad Lavrov working outside what appears to be his hotel room, was recorded.

The Associated Press reported earlier Monday that Russia’s top diplomat was being treated in Bali for a heart condition, citing three Indonesian government and medical officials.

Lavrov, who represented Russian President Vladimir Putin during last weekend’s East Asia Summit in Cambodia, is expected to do the same during this week’s G-20 forum, though the Kremlin has left open the possibility of Putin taking part in the gathering virtually.

The mixed reports coincide with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s surprise appearance in Kherson, Ukraine, after the southern port city was liberated from Russian occupation last week. Zelensky is also anticipated to address the G-20 summit virtually.
