Corruption is rife in New York politics, federal prosecutor Preet Bharara said Sunday morning in an interview about his work.
“We have found that corruption is rife in a lot of institutions in New York and throughout New York,” Bharara said on ABC’s “This Week.” “That’s true in the legislature. It’s also the case that there’s corruption, we believe, in the executive branches as well, and we’ll ferret it out wherever we can find it.”
As the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, with oversight over a number of financial institutions, Bharara has gained a reputation as a crusading prosecutor.
Among other prosecutions involving political corruption in Albany, Bharara oversaw the conviction of former state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.
Bharara also said Sunday that populist concerns about financial misdeeds on Wall Street fanned by candidates like Bernie Sanders are justifiable.
“To an extent, people are right about the system being rigged,” he said.
“People have a right to be, given the track record of this office and other offices of exposing fraud, to be worried about that,” he added.
