One witness in third D.C. hearing on Gray’s hiring decisions

Friday’s D.C. Council hearing on Mayor Vince Gray’s hiring and salary decisions was once supposed to be a whopper, but key witnesses have dodged subpoenas and all that’s left is human resources director Judy Banks.

Still, there should be some fireworks at the mid-afternoon hearing.

Banks is in a bit of a pickle. She told the council under oath in March that she helped the son of a top Gray administration official Brandon Webb get a job in the fire department at the request of the fire chief.

A month later, and fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe and Department of Employment Services Director Rochelle Webb told the council that wasn’t so. Rochelle Webb had e-mails between her and Banks showing that it was she, not Ellerbe, who asked Banks to hire her son.

Rochelle Webb even said she was fired when she told Gray’s chief of staff that she would testify against Banks.

A council source said Banks is expected to say she “remembered incorrectly” when she’s quizzed on Friday.
