Donald Trump is leading Hillary Clinton in one new poll and tied with her another. Both polls were taken after the Republican National Convention, giving Trump an overall lead of 0.2 percentage points over Clinton in the Real Clear Politics average of polls. This marks Trump’s first RCP lead since May.
A CNN/ORC poll found Trump three percentage points ahead of Clinton in a head-to-head matchup, six points higher than his polling pre-convention. Trump’s 48 percent showing, compared to Clinton’s 45 percent, is the businessman’s best in a CNN poll since September 2015. The upturn is due in large part to independent voters, who sided with Trump after the RNC last week, CNN reported.
Trump’s favorability also jumped after the convention, from 39 percent to 46 percent. Voter confidence in his ability to handle the economy and terrorism shot up, while the percentage that trusted Clinton to better manage foreign policy fell 7 percentage points, from 57 percent pre-convention to 50 percent post-convention.
A CBS News poll also found that Trump’s polling bounced back after the convention. The businessman is now tied with Clinton at 42 percent, but he leads her by a single percentage point, 44 percent to 43 percent, when voters who say they don’t know or that it depends are asked to choose between the Trump and Clinton.
Like the CNN poll, the CBS News poll found that Trump’s favorability increased four points post-convention. However, 53 percent of voters still view the businessman negatively. Clinton does not fare much better, with 29 percent of voters viewing her as untrustworthy.
