Lobster fishermen were five miles off the coast of Addison, Maine when they discovered a deer swimming in the water.
“Couldn’t let the poor guy suffer and drown, so we brought him aboard and sailed him half-hour to land and dropped him off on the beach! And sailed back out to haul!” Ren Dorr, the captain of the fishing vessel, said in a Monday Facebook post. Dorr attached several pictures to the post documenting the group’s rescue of the deer.
The post garnered thousands of likes, shares, and comments, with many heralding the fishermen as heroes.
Jared Thaxter, one of the fishermen, told ABC the rescue “was definitely worth the time and effort.”
“We had to circle a few times to get a hold of him,” he said. “They grabbed him by the spikes and maybe a leg or two, and just dragged him in.”
Thaxter said it “was a great feeling” to see the deer reach land safely. “You can’t let anything suffer like that when you can easily help,” he said.
