‘I’ll end wars’: Libertarian Justin Amash promises to ‘bring our troops home’ as president

A former Republican who is likely to top the Libertarian Party’s presidential ticket is fed up with decadeslong wars in the Middle East.

On Wednesday, Rep. Justin Amash tweeted he will put an end to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars if elected president.

“As president, I’ll end wars that Congress won’t authorize and bring our troops home,” Amash tweeted. “A war should be fought only when it is just and has the consent of the people.”

Amash, who is polling 5% in a nationwide poll released by Monmouth University on Wednesday, is the odds-on favorite to claim the Libertarian nomination. Libertarian Party members believe Amash’s legislative experience will elevate the party in the same way that former Govs. Gary Johnson and Bill Weld did in 2016 when they headed the Libertarian ticket.

On July 4, 2019, Amash announced in a Washington Post article that he was leaving the Republican Party amid a “partisan death spiral.” Amash initially switched to an independent before joining the Libertarian Party in April.
