The House Intelligence Committee voted along party lines to approve a 300-page impeachment report written by Democrats that alleges President Trump abused his office and obstructed a congressional inquiry.
The vote was 13-9 and took place in the basement of the Capitol.
The vote ends one phase of the impeachment proceedings and begins another.
Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said he’ll send the report to the Judiciary Committee, which will decide whether to draft articles of impeachment.
The report details “the story of the scheme” that Democrats said shows Trump tried to bribe Ukrainian government officials into investigating his top political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, in exchange for critical security aid and a White House meeting.
“As this report details, the impeachment inquiry has found that President Trump, personally and acting through agents within and outside of the U.S. government, solicited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, to benefit his reelection,” the report, which was released Tuesday, said.
The report also accused Trump of “an unprecedented campaign of obstruction of this impeachment inquiry.”
Republicans issued their own report on Monday that exonerated the president of wrongdoing.
The GOP held a press conference Tuesday night to continue condemning what they say is “an impeachment obsession” by Democrats, who they say have been trying to throw the president out since he took office.
