Police killing in Louisiana latest in a string of law enforcement fatalities

A police officer in Louisiana has been shot and killed on her way to work, according to local media reports, the latest in a string of law enforcement fatalities in in the state in recent years.

A police spokesman in Shreveport says it happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday as the officer prepared to leave for her overnight shift, according to the newspaper the Advocate.

The shooting remains under investigation. Cpl. Marcus Hines said one person has been brought in for questioning, but had not been charged as of Thursday morning.

While Hines did not identify the officer, the Shreveport Times reported her name as Chateri Payne.

The department released a statement praising the officer as someone who “was proving herself to be a capable professional.”

The incident harkens back to previous episodes that claimed police lives in Louisiana’s capital city. Six officers lost their lives in a 2016 shooting — an ambush apparently in response to the death of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old African-American man who was shot dead at close range by two white Baton Rouge Police Department officers.
