Hall of fame Indiana University basketball coach Bobby Knight led a stadium-wide chant in support of President Trump Friday evening.
“You know there is a great president many years ago, Harry Truman. The American public got a little thing to let him know how much they appreciated it. It was something called, like, ‘Give him hell, Harry’,” Knight said to the crowd gathered at a high school in Indianapolis for the campaign rally.
“I’d like you to join with me in saying something like, ‘He’s already given them Hell’ … I got it … I want you to join me in saying something else. Just like they said it to Harry Truman, who was a great president, and so is he … ‘Go Get Em’ Donald,” Knight said. The crowd broke out in resounding cheers.
Trump was stumping for GOP Senate candidate Mike Braun, who is neck-in-neck with incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind. The president also enlisted three-time national-championship-winning, Knight, who also racked up 11 Big Ten titles and more than 600 wins. Knight, infamous for his profane courtside outbursts, was fired by the university in 2000.
Unlike most of the other Great Lakes states, Indiana tends to lean Republican.
Prior to Donnelly taking the seat, the state has elected a Republican senator for over three decades. Braun, like many GOP Senate candidates, trails his opponent within the margin of error. RealClearPolitics’ polling average has incumbent Donnelly up roughly 0.8 percentage points.
In such a heavily Republican state, Donnelly could have done himself some damage when he voted against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination.
